Best Study Aid Websites

This page consists of the best websites that I have found to help focus whilst researching and writing.

The Manchester Phrasebank:
The Manchester Phrasebank is the ultimate tool for making work appear 100% more academic than it was before. It has everything from how to introduce work to the best way to report results.

Mynoise.net:
Need some ambiance whilst writing? Mynoise.net provides the perfect tools. Completely free, it allows you to play everything from the sounds of a Japanese Garden to the noises of a busy cafe. If you have a couple of pounds to spare, you can also donate to the website to ensure that it continues to provide this wonderful service.

ForceDraft:
Always getting distracted whilst trying to write up? ForceDraft allows you to block out the rest of your computer whilst working. This free app has three settings: timed, words written or free writing. The first two modes will ensure that you cannot exit the app until the allotted amount has been reached. The last one allows you to write to your heart's content.

Cold Turkey:
Now, if you don't fancy blocking out your whole computer, just a few pesky distracting sites like Facebook or Twitter, then Cold Turkey is your best bet. This app blocks you from accessing certain sites for the time period that you suggest, be it half an hour, an hour or even 24 hours, it ensures that you don't get distracted by that stress shopping you're always trying to do instead of work!

Mendeley:
Always losing your references? Then Mendeley is your friend. Storing everything from images to that weird article you found on the 5th page of Google (Yes, Google has more than two pages), Mendeley is the free referencing software that will quickly become your best friend. It doesn't come without its drawbacks though. Unless the article has all of the information needed for the full reference in an obvious spot, Mendeley can often miss vital parts off of the final referencing list. However, the fact that it is compatible with Microsoft Office and you can save references from Google are the redeeming qualities of this little app.

Evernote:
This fantastic app is a lifesaver when it comes to jotting down random ideas you have whilst on a night out, drinking coffee with friends or if you find yourself notebook-less. It gives you the ability to connect all of your devices by logging into the app. It has notebooks, web-clipping and so much more. Definitely worth a download for the academic on the move.
